In March '09 some Matagorda County residents with the assistance of Texas Public Citizen, came together to form an Organization to oppose the proposed White Stallion Coal Plant which was being fast-tracked by TCEQ for a publicly announced "groundbreaking" August of this year. At that time the name for our Organization & it's officers were chosen; the non-profit status 501 (c) (3) was applied for and obtained. The Chairman is Dr. Robert Malina, a Bay City resident and recently retired Univ. of Texas Professor. Directionwise,
we needed 2 things: The Sierra Club and Environmental Defense Fund immediately agreed to provide Attorney's & Legal work, "for as long as it takes" at no charge. White Stallion is a Kentucky based/owned company. They hired one of Texas' oldest Law Firms in Texas to represent them - Vinson-Elkins (Houston). Twice we have been to Court against White Stallion. Twice we have won. White Stallion's fast-track schedule was derailed by the Judge from the Texas State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH). He reset the next sequence of 4-5 days hearings for Feb. 2010 in Austin, giving our Organization time to get the issue publicized & before the citizens of Matagorda County. Our website has a Recap page of the Court proceedings. Our No Coal Coalition website has lots of information thru it's links. Additionally, we have YardSigns, printed handouts, posters, a Robert Redford movie "Fighting Goliath" on DVD, all free for the asking...donations would be helpful. Our goals are quite simple: A moratorium on this Coal Plant. If and when Technology develops more than just a meaningless phrase "Clean Coal"....OK by us. Our website has a Take Action page where you can do something this very minute. The email is pre-addressed to all 47 Matagorda County officials. It will send our Statement - or - the senders comments, to all 47 County Officials. Eventwise, we will have a booth at every Bay City Market Days, in the Rice Parade (October), continue w/various signs/flyers/speakers bureau/town hall meetings/Billboards/and a Countywide voting-ballot Referendum. And whatever additional ideas our members contribute.
